Mangosteen, rambutans, and lychees, oh my!

I am finally in Cambodia. I have just woken after my first night in the country. It was a wonderful sleep as I was exhausted after the long flight here. There were a few hiccups along the way, and they all seemed to happen to me. The most frustrating was my visa. I had been advised by the organisation that I will be working for that they had arranged my one year visa for me and that it would be at the airport waiting for me upon my arrival. There was no visa waiting for me. I had to pay $25 for a one month business visa. Meaning during this month I have to leave the country and re-enter on a different visa. I can then apply for an extension. Apparently it will cost over $200 to get my current visa extended. The extension of a different visa will cost $5. I’m not sure I understand how it all works, only that it’s quite frustrating. Oh well, a compulsory trip to Vietnam isn’t all bad.

We have two weeks staying in a hotel while we have orientation. Yesterday was a day off. After a bit of a rest in our hotel we went for a walk to look for the river. We took a wrong turn somewhere and after a few hours we got a tuk tuk back to the hotel. We’re quickly getting used to the low prices. We were going to go to a local hotpot restaurant last night, and when we heard it would cost $6 each we all thought, woah, that’s a little expensive isn’t it.

I have stocked up on mangosteens and rambutans. We had a delicious lychee and mint juice. I think I will definitely be eating more fruit here!

This morning after breakfast we are heading to the Australian embassy. And we will be spending the afternoon with our organisations. Hopefully I will get a better idea as to what my job will be. Today is Vijay’s birthday so we’re off to the FCC (Foreign Correspondents Club). I should probably mention the names of the people I am with. Irena, Elysse, Jacqui, Vijay and Guy. For those who would like to read about our travels from another perspective, Elysse has her own blog at Well, time for breakfast. We have been told it is on level 6, but there doesn’t seem to be a level 6, so we will have to do some exploring.

Any thoughts?
